Connecting to Inspire Young People

By Cambium Networks

Giving back to the community is a priority at Cambium Networks.

This week, we were honored to have fifteen students from the McAuliffe Elementary School STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) program and their sponsors come to our home office in Rolling Meadows. While all of the young people were familiar with the Wi-Fi connectivity they use every day, this was an opportunity for them to learn first-hand how it reaches them.

These fifth-through-eighth graders learned about the basics of wireless connectivity: long range point-to-point backhaul, point-to-multipoint distribution networks to connect buildings, and indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi access networks. In our development labs, they met with engineers and learned about circuit boards and how we test for reliability by performing heat testing, interference testing, and capacity verifications.

The best learning is hands-on experience. The young people were given a new cnPilot™ Wi-Fi Access Point and were led through the process of initialization, configuration, and creating their own unique splash pages. In less than 20 minutes, the teams had three new 802.11ac Wave 2 APs live on our network. Students were able to log in to their own splash pages using their smartphones.

Over the course of their two-hour visit, these young people were able to step out of the classroom and into the workplace and have a highly positive first experience with technologists and wireless connectivity. Check out the video of their visit.

Our team members at Cambium Networks were equally energized by the day. The students’ enthusiasm in seeing their Wi-Fi work right the first time validates the many hours invested in planning, design, testing, delivering and marketing the product. Their enthusiasm keeps all of us young.

Best of all, our team has designed this experience so that it can be repeated to benefit other students, in other locations. If you would like us to be a part of your school’s STEAM program, simply contact us. To find out about other ways we give back to the community, check out our Social Responsibility stories.

In the meantime, enjoy the video of the moment, and know that the future will be in good hands.
