Congratulations to Qualcomm Technologies on Certification as an AFC Systems Supplier in the 6 GHz Band

By Scott Imhoff

It is a new era in outdoor fixed wireless broadband in North America. Congratulations to Qualcomm Technologies on being among the first to receive FCC certification as an Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC) systems supplier in the critical 6 GHz frequency band. Cambium has worked closely with Qualcomm from the start to ensure this 6 GHz end to end solution combining Qualcomm’s AFC and Cambium’s fixed wireless broadband solutions will be efficient, simple and reliable enabling service providers to deliver on the promise of bringing faster broadband service throughout the United States and Canada. This certification on their turnkey Automated Frequency Coordination Suite marks a pivotal step forward in utilizing this spectrum to its full potential, paving the way for innovative broadband applications and services.

Qualcomm’s certification as an AFC system operator is a testament to their technical expertise and commitment to advancing the wireless ecosystem. With this approval, Qualcomm, alongside other certified AFC system operators, will play a crucial role in managing spectrum access for Wi-Fi devices, ensuring efficient use of the 6 GHz band while protecting incumbent services from interference.

Cambium Networks is also making significant strides in the 6 GHz space with ePMP 4600 6 GHz outdoor fixed wireless solutions, already approved for use in Canada by the ISEDC. Following the latest software release 5.6.0, which includes the eagerly anticipated TDD Synchronization feature, we are poised to enhance large ePMP network sectors significantly. This development is crucial for scaling up and reducing self-interference, enabling frequency re-use, and ultimately supporting network operators as they begin their 6 GHz rollouts.

ePMP 4600 platform differentiators

• Scalability and interference mitigation based on its unique air interface.

• Over the air efficiency with 802.11ax standard and overlays ePMP features such as TDD synchronization, SmartQoS, and frame optimization.

• Noise isolation with orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA), multi-user multiple-input, multiple-output (MU-MIMO) in both the uplink and downlink directions, and TDD synchronization.

Automated Frequency Coordination – Simplified and at No Additional Cost

Cambium Networks equipment will operate across 850 MHz of the 6 GHz spectrum band allocated by the FCC. Cambium Networks is working closely with and leveraging Qualcomm Technologies’ turnkey Automated Frequency Coordination Suite. Cambium Networks will make the AFC process transparent to the service provider. With the AFC interface built into the radio, the service provider will easily use the AFC service with no extra charge or hassle.

PMP 450v 6 GHz fixed wireless broadband technology

Service providers with existing PMP 450 networks can increase capacity and service levels with the new PMP 450v to leverage the higher capacity of the 6 GHz spectrum. Doing so simultaneously supports increased demand from business and residential locations without upgrading the equipment at the subscriber location. This is a win-win for both service providers and their customers.

“The PMP 450v access point is backward compatible with the PMP 450 subscriber modules,” said Matt Mangriotis, Senior Director Product Management, Cambium Networks. “A single access point upgrade expands the network into the 6 GHz frequencies without any change to the existing 5 GHz network.” Watch this video for more information.

PMP 450v platform differentiators

  • Operating frequency from 5.15 GHz to 7.125 GHz in a single radio
  • Hardware that supports channel widths up to 200 MHz
  • 4×4 MIMO technology in the access point to maximize throughput
  • 4×4 MIMO high-performance subscriber module
  • 2-carrier aggregation enabling flexible and seamless expansion into 6 GHz, while maintaining 5 GHz existing networks
