Disaster preparedness has never been more critical than today as the events of recent weeks have proven.  To prepare for any and all circumstances, operators of mission critical infrastructure need to consider multiple technologies and resilient architectures when designing communications networks.

At the just concluded APEC summit of world leaders in Manila, Philippines, solutions from Cambium Networks were deployed to do just that.  With heads of state, thousands of delegates and media all converging in a small geographical area the need for high capacity, secure and reliable communications was key.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is an international organization which seeks to foster free trade and economic prosperity among its member-economies in the Asia-Pacific region. The APEC is composed of 21 member-economies, namely: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, People’s Republic of China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the United States of America, and Vietnam.

This year’s APEC activities in Manila culminated in an economic summit November 18th and 19th  with many heads of state attending along with delegates from around the world.  A large network operator in Manila was tasked with providing data connectivity to the island where the summit occurred.  They had fiber deployed but needed a resilient backup in case of a fiber cut or other disruption.  The solution was to deploy two Cambium Networks PTP 650 links in parallel over 13 km of water to provide more than 600 Mbps of backup capacity to the event location.

The PTP 650 excels at over-water communications and long links so the operator and partners knew it could be delivered rapidly with little drama.  And with the highly reliable hardware, predictable link availability and steady self-optimizing capacity the disaster recovery plan could be proposed and approved ahead of the event.

Cambium Networks solutions are securing critical infrastructure and preparing network operators for potential disasters every day and in all parts of the world.  Tell us your stories on the Cambium Community forum.
