Connecting the World’s Largest Party

More than 2,500,000 people attended Carnival in Salvador Bahia over the seven-day long celebration. It is one of the largest street festivals in the world. Of course, while many people are enjoying the party, they still want to be connected. This year, two of the largest pavilions, the “Camarote Planeta Band” and “Camarote Salvador” chose the cnPilot™ E400 from Cambium Networks to provide WiFi connectivity in their public areas. Each of the two areas was more than 8,000 square meters, and hosted 6,000 people.

The E400 Enterprise WiFi modules provided coverage for the indoor VIP area, relaxation area, beauty salon, fitness area, and the common areas. ePMP™ Hotspots were installed to provide WiFi connectivity outdoors. The goal was to provide a blanket of coverage with no “shadow zones.” The event managers in the hotels were concerned because the cnPilot E400 is physically smaller than equipment they had used in the past, and they wanted to be sure that they had complete connectivity. In the days leading up to the festival, the unobtrusive WiFi Access Points were installed on the ceilings and in the support stanchions. Testing proved that connectivity was available in all areas.

The real test would come during the event when the system was loaded with users. At the Camarote Planeta Band pavilion, the system supported more than 450 simultaneous users, and at the Camarote Salvador there were 380 simultaneous users. There were no problems with the system, and the event managers plan to continue to use the E400 in the hotel and future events because it provided more throughput and required less space and less power.
