3 GHz global spectrum usage in wireless broadband

By Amanda Kowalik   February 5, 2014

Broadband connectivity benefits everyone, and wireless broadband enables connectivity to be available faster and at a lower cost than trenching. Wireless broadband requires RF spectrum – a scarce limited resource Because of the tremendous demand for broadband, government regulators and corporations have to answer critical questions regarding spectrum allocation. These include how to allocate portions of the spectrum to satisfy the needs of people while at the same time improving spectrum efficiency and utilization.

The 3.5 GHz spectrum has been a global licensed spectrum, popular in the EU, Latin America and Canada. Operators have acquired licenses to use this spectrum primarily for WiMAX mobile networks. Despite its significant worldwide potential, it was not well suited for indoor coverage, resulting in dropped calls. At the same time, the 3.5 GHz spectrum is ideal for fixed wireless enterprise and residential outdoor connectivity. It carries the following characteristics:

•    Low noise floor (licensed band)

•    Higher power limits (compared to 5 GHz unlicensed)

•    Good propagation qualities for nLOS (near-line-of-sight)  and NLOS (non-line-of-sight)

Available in the US and Canada, the 3.65 GHz spectrum is lightly-licensed with the same great propagation and power benefits. . At the present time FCC is considering adding an additional 100 MHz (for a total of 150 MHz) in this spectrum range,  and make it available for innovative mobile and fixed broadband services.

At Cambium Networks we listened to our customer needs and advanced our innovative PMP 450 platform with additional 3.5 and 3.6 GHz licensed bands. Our solution with industry leading GPS synchronization and high spectral efficiency of 4.5 Mb/Hz is ideal for industry verticals such as WISPs (Wireless Service Providers), enterprise usage and the Government Public Safety Sector. Designed for fixed outdoor applications, the field proven PMP 450 platform is optimized for rate, reach, reliability and throughput. It features the most resilient and effective set of wireless broadband technologies in the marketplace.
